French Hookers March in Street

(PARIS, FRANCE) -- Dozens of prostitutes took to the streets of Paris Saturday not to ply their trade but to defend it in a demonstration of "hooker pride" and calls for recognizing their human rights.

The French hookers are asking for the repeal of a 2003 law which makes soliciting subject to a fine of 3,750 euros (4,600 dollars) and two months in prison, as well as revoking the residency card of any foreigner.

The prostitutes like Karima, who has sold "sexual services" for 18 years, refer to it as "Sarkozy's law" after the French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy.

"Sarkozy's law has put the girls in danger," said the 36-year-old transsexual.

A 33-year-old Brazilian woman expressed the same view, claiming she could no longer work in the Parisian park, Bois du Boulogne, because "It's too dangerous" since "Sarkozy's law makes us more vulnerable... In the hands of the client." "We are workers like anyone else," she added.

The prostitute protest drew about 100 marchers, according to police, while organizers put the turnout at several hundred.

The hookers marched from Place Pigalle to Rue Saint-Denis shouting slogans: "You sleep with us, you vote against us" and "Not guilty, not victims, proud to be prostitutes".

Time To Legalize Prostitution

It is the oldest profession known to man, yet in most parts of this world it is illegal and viewed as immoral. We hear many horror stories about prostitution, the most sickening and disturbing are those that involve minors. We also learn that many women are forced into prostitution against their will. There are countless scumbag pimps all over the world who claim to love and protect their women, when all they do is steal their money, give them virtually nothing, and beat them mercilessly for little reason. Some other folks, men and women, do this out of desperation to feed their kids or even worse, supply their nasty drug addiction habits. Another bad part of the profession is the spread of Sexually Transmitted Diseases and other deadly diseases such as AIDS. Of course there are many more arguments about prostitution; however the biggest one is the morality claim.

Why then, do I think we should legalize it? Because I think by controlling and monitoring the profession, we can eliminate much of the poison associated with it. Lets face it, we will never rid the world of prostitution. It has taken on many forms – ranging from Street Walkers to Highly Paid Classy Escorts. Many would be surprised to learn who has 1) Used the services of prostitutes and 2) Who is actually involved in the prostitution game. Services of prostitutes have been and will always be used world-wide by Governments, Fortune 500 companies, Doctors, Lawyers, Accountants, you name it. Guys often pop their cherries the first time using the services of an escort, and many fantasies are fulfilled by individuals and couples. The use of escorts by couples is rising dramatically. Many of you would be surprised at how many of the ladies and gentlemen that appear at your local PTA meeting are Escorts either part time or full time. The use of prostitutes have been known to help land multi-million dollar contracts, sway Olympic Votes, gain political favors, I could go on and on with this.

In my ideal world, governments would regulate the prostitution industry. This would be done indirectly by hiring a private company to be responsible for all aspects of the trade, which is not uncommon for governments these days. Private companies are much more efficient when it comes to running things. Regulating and monitoring the industry would bring us much more positive than negative. I would force workers to be licensed – and part of the license terms would include bi-monthly tests by an accredited and certified lab with the results monitored by Doctors. This would remove any unsafe workers from the mix and help control the spread of diseases.

Income from taxation of the industry could go a long way to help reduce debts and give a boost to community programs and assistance to those in need. The biggest argument here would be the moral issue of making money from immoral activities, but think about it and look back at history; Governments and Politicians have made money in much more scandalous and harmful ways!

Other benefits include the significant reduction of unsightly street trash we often see in the seedier neighborhoods across the world making it one step closer to making our streets safer and more attractive to tourists. Police forces these days have many more severe issues to worry about. Violent crimes are increasing at an alarming rate, as are drug and gun related offenses. The safety of our Children in schools and on the streets is also a much more critical problem to deal with. Regulating prostitution will not only allow Police to focus on more critical issues, but give them some much needed tools to better deal with the real issues we are facing today. Some fear that regulating the industry will push the seedier element further underground, this may be true but I also feel it would significantly reduce the numbers making them much easier to spot and deal with.

Prostitutes of all kinds are always faced with the danger and have a fear of violent crimes towards them. Providing them with a safe and controlled environment would help resolve and reduce the number of cases. I am a firm believer that sexually related violent crimes such as rape, molestation and more importantly sexual abuse towards minors, would be much lower if people had a way to find what their looking for legally. As I have said, escorts are used to fulfill fantasies, if we could supply these needs and desires easily, they would not have to resort to the despicable acts they are performing.

At one point in history, it was illegal to consume alcohol. All prohibition did was drive the issue deep underground, however alcohol was still readily available. Governments came to their senses and decided to regulate and make money off of the sale, and this opened up not only a steady stream of income, but also opened new opportunities for entrepreneurs, making the restaurant and hospitality industry much more profitable and viable. Prohibition did not cure alcoholics, legalizing it did not either, however it made it easier to control and the criminal element was greatly reduced.

I am not naive enough to think that regulation would solve every single problem associated with the trade. I know that it would not eliminate all forms of illegal and under-ground instances of the sex trade, that there will always be women forced to work the trade in one form or another, and always be filthy pimps out there. But the numbers will be significantly lower and greatly reduced, and much more easily monitored and dealt with. We know it exists, we know it will ALWAYS be there, why not make it better?
