We get inside Stephanie Swift’s head, to find out how she feels about the business...

Q: Lets start right off with a tough one. Your mom. What does she think about how you’ve made your living?

A: Well, lets just say that she accepts me. It’s not at all to say that she encourages or condones what I do, but she accepts that I am an individual, and I made a choice for myself. She is proud of me that I am living self sufficiently, and I think she worries more about what is around me, than actually for me. She has come to a few sets, and she thinks people are nice. She just doesn’t understand why I would want to be a part of it, but she accepts whatever I choose. She’s just being a mom.

Q: Being that you are quite outspoken in terms of the liberation you have found in the adult industry, how do you feel about the business continuing to be dominated by males?

A: My feeling is that its going to even out over time. The girls are so busy making the movies and the guest appearances that sometimes I think they forget to stop and realize that they can direct and write and produce, too. You’ll notice how many more companies are being started up by females in the industry. I think it’s a very interesting time to be in porn.

Q: So would you say you’ve seen significant change since you started?

A: Yes, absolutely. I started in ’94, and things have basically done a 180 since then. That is such a big part of the reason I am staying in, because I went through a lot, and I think that I can prevent a lot of girls from making some of the beginner mistakes that I did. I want the girls to reach their full potential and I want them to feel respected and well taken care of. There were definitely parts of my career when I was not feeling that. I also want to help girls make sure they don’t regret what they are getting into.

Q: Is that a major concern? Not only for you, but for the industry as a whole; is regret something that is talked about a lot within the business?

A: It's more a matter of understanding that there are consequences to your actions. I don’t want to scare anyone away, but I think it’s really important for girls (and guys) to know exactly what they are getting into. It would be an understatement to say that there are not a lot of people who are cut out for this business. It will literally follow you around for the rest of your life; you cannot escape the fact that film and video are forever, and you will always run the risk of someone “finding out” no matter how much you might want to forget. I always tell girls that if there is anything else you want to do with your life, go and do it first. And if porn is what you really want to do then try, but with the understanding your whole entire life will change. You will always be treated differently, and you need to be able to accept that. And then of course I tell them that if you’re going to do it, do it all the way.

Q: What would you say some of the consequences are?

A: You need to be prepared to be recognized constantly. Some people make it sound as if they go on to live their normal, quiet lives, but for the most part you need to understand that is an oversight. If you have gained any degree of success, there are always people who know you, or who think they know you, and they want to talk to you and they want to know more about you then you might be willing to share. For example, I have thought a lot about going back to school, but in California it would be next to impossible because of how many people would recognize me, and how many others would not take me seriously. Realistically, everyone judges everything else, but porn is on a whole other level.

Q: If you were to go back to school, what would you study?

A: I am really only interested in taking classes. I love learning, and there are so many things I am passionate about, but at this point I don’t have time or desire to pursue any degrees or anything like that. I love being in school, and having that structure. That’s one thing I have noticed having been in this industry for so long, and out of school for just as long, that my vocabulary isn’t as wide as it used to be. And now, with how much focus I have on my website and my company (Swift Entertainment), I feel like I’m not as sharp as I used to be in a promotional sense. It’s all a matter of balance, essentially, and I am still trying to find mine.

Q: How did you ultimately decide on porn as a career? It sounds like you must have explored a number of other options.

A: Even as a kid, I had a fascination with modeling, and dancing, and I guess sex. I would find my grandpa’s Playboy’s under the bed and I would sneak a peak when no one was around. I have always been fascinated with the female body. I didn’t know then that I was attracted, I just thought it was pretty. I started dancing to supplement my income around 18. I had this boyfriend who would go to strip clubs, and he would tell me I was too plain and too much of a nerd, and basically tell me I could never be like those girls. I think I ended up where I did because I was tired of being told what I couldn’t do.

Q: So it was rebellion? You started porn as a rebellion against an ex-boyfriend?

A: No, not per se. I’ll just call it a catalyst. I didn’t start movies right away. I was actually 23. For about 3 or 4 years prior to that, I was doing nude modeling. I entered a couple of contests and things like that, and I always did pretty well for myself. I know this sounds crude, but modeling or doing movies, was basically all the same to me. At the end of the day, it’s all taking your clothes off. I think I actually got work because I respected that it was a business, and I did my job well. I would show up, and I would actually know the dialogue. I didn’t get any box covers because I actually signed a waver saying I wouldn’t do them; I didn’t want to be “found out” that way.

Q: So in the beginning, you were really against people finding out what you did?

A: I was just scared. I wasn’t ready to face a lot of the people in my life. Now, I am proud of what I do because I am successful, and I worked hard for myself. I don’t feel like I am hurting anyone because of what I do. I’m just expressing myself in a different way, and as I have grown up, I have learned that this is not the way that everyone will understand or respect. I didn’t get into the industry because I had problems and I was running away. I am now a successful model, actor, producer and director. I have come a long way, and I am proud of where I am.

Q: You obviously have a lot of interaction within the industry. Do you still have social circles outside of porn?

A: I don’t really socialize with anyone, actually. I am just so busy with work that it’s hard. My personal assistant is one of my best friends. And I have a few girlfriends from high school. Then there is my boyfriend, and that’s about it.

Q: Care to dish a little about your boyfriend?

A: He’s 10 years younger than me, and he doesn’t care that I do porn. That’s about all I can say really, or it would be an interview all its own.

Q: Do you consider yourself bi-sexual outside of the business?

A: Yes, absolutely. I had a girlfriend before I had a boyfriend. There is just such a perfect chemistry between women. Right now, I am in a monogamous relationship with a male, but I am always open to different possibilities.

Q: How does being in adult change your personal sex life?

A: For me, it hasn’t changed much. I have an ability to separate the two for sure. Just because something looks good on camera, does not mean it feels good in real life, or that I would choose to enact that with my partner.

Q: What would you say is your favorite part of the job?

A: I love being recognized by girls when they are just so excited. I love that I can have a positive effect on other girls who are just starting out in the industry, because I feel like I can help steer them if it’s necessary towards where they ultimately want to end up.

Q: Have you considered plastic surgery, or more specifically, a boob job? How do you avoid that trap in this industry?

A: I have absolutely not considered a boob job. I have had every offer under the sun, including people offering to pay for them for me. It’s just not a part of my focus. I have less than no interest in it. It’s actually a reoccurring nightmare that I have, that I wake up one day on an operating table, and there are these great big boobs in front of me. So to answer that question, it wasn’t very hard for me to avoid that trap; my mind was long made up.

Q: I hear that you practice martial arts. Confirm or deny.

A: Confirmed. I have an orange belt, which is fourth level, in Wado-Kai karate. It’s a Japanese and Korean mixed karate. I don’t have a studio out here, and I don’t think that I will pursue advancing, really. It wouldn’t really work right now, because if I fought and got hurt, that wouldn’t look too good in a movie!

Q: I also hear you have a love for pets.

A: I do! My pets are my babies! Doggies and birdies and fishies. I name all of my pets after things I like, like cartoons and authors.

Q: Do you have any favorite authors?

A: I’m not really intense about favorites. I really like a lot of books from Anne Rice and Katherine Harvey. That’s all I can think of off the top of my head.

Q: Last question; any regrets?

A: Not really. I think it’s important to be comfortable with who you are and where you’ve been, both positive and negative. All of your life experiences are what make up who you are. I wouldn’t change anything about who I am. If anything, I regret not going full force as soon as I started, because I may have passed on some good opportunities that were handed to me. But everything happens for a reason, and I am good now. So no, no regrets.
